UWA College: English language proficiency changes

Recent changes to the English language proficiency requirements for international students wanting to study in Australia will impact student visa applications – check you’re up to date with the new requirements.
New English language requirements for pathways packaged with English
See the table below for details of the new requirements for students wishing to study at UWA College. This applies to students who require a UWA Centre for English Language Teaching (UWA CELT) Language and Communication Essentials (LCE) course included in their package to meet UWA College course requirements.

Please note: there are no changes to the English language entry requirements for UWA College programs.
The Department of Home Affairs accepts the following English language tests in support of a student’s visa application:
Cambridge English (CAE) (also known as C1 Advanced)
International English Language Testing System (IELTS), including One Skill Retake (OSR)
Pearson Test of English (PTE)
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT).

Please note: students must be made aware that the Department will, on occasion, request one of the formal English language proficiency tests listed above to confirm that the minimum IELTS equivalent requirement is being met.
Applying for a standalone ELICOS update
If a student doesn’t meet the minimum English requirement for a packaged offer from UWA College, including courses packaged with a UWA CELT LCE program, they can apply for a standalone English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) course at UWA's CELT – and an associated visa. Following this, while still in Australia, students can then apply for a visa for their packaged UWA College/UWA program.
We envisage that these students will receive two offers from UWA College:
one offer for a standalone CELT LCE ELICOS study program, plus
one for a UWA College/UWA packaged offer, with a condition of successful achievement of the minimum IELTS requirement for entry into their UWA College course.
Students only need to submit one application in the usual way. UWA College Admissions will determine whether one or two offers will be issued depending on the students’ English language proficiency level.
Advice from the Department urges students to be open in their ELICOS visa application and clearly state that their intention is to achieve the minimum required IELTS to apply for a student visa for a UWA College/UWA packaged program afterwards.
